"It's not for me to tell anybody or to pretend to have insights beyond what I absolutely know, but my instincts are that the idea Heath was disturbed by playing The Joker is ridiculous.
"Heath was somebody who, like myself, acted for that immersion in a character. It's not an unusual thing. And from working with him and knowing him, I don't think that was unusual for him at all."
—Christian Bale, in Total Film magazine on speculation that the late Heath Ledger may have been distressed by his role in the upcoming The Dark Knight

Christian Bale talks parenting, privacy and “kindred spirit” Heath Ledger in the new issue of Parade. Here are some great excerpts:
Your co-star Heath Ledger, who plays The Joker, died tragically after the fi lm wrapped. Do you mind talking about him? No, listen, I want to talk about Heath. When you miss somebody, you want to speak about him. He was a unique character, a very infectious character. He was a good man, and I was glad to have spent time with him. He was somebody who I’d been seeing on a daily basis for months. It takes a long time to accept that someone’s gone, when all body and mind are telling you that this is somebody you will know for a great deal of time. He was something of a kindred spirit to myself.
It must be difficult. Much of it has to do with my respect for his daughter, whom he loved so dearly and whom he would talk about so often. For me, that is of incredible importance. I hope in a small way that The Dark Knight can be a celebration of his work. Not like the hideous circus after he died, which I felt was an invasion of a private life. This movie is not a personal home video. This is what he did. I hope people will embrace that in the correct fashion.
Tell me about agreeing to do the next Terminator. I’ve always had two varying degrees of success, and I’m not talking about anything to do with box office. I’m talking about my own parameters. You know, an interest in attempting in a wide variety of stories. I never desired to be a big studio movie actor, action actor. I’ve never desired to be a serious independent movie actor. I enjoy all of those. It depends on what mood I’m in. And therefore, I will try to bend those stories into becoming something that I can enjoy myself, varying degrees of success with that. We have an opportunity with it for a continuation, but also a reinvention, and I have to say, much the same way in my mind as we have with Batman. And beyond that I won’t say anymore because we’re just starting. (Editor’s Translation: “No, I can’t talk about it.”)

Heath Ledger is getting a fond tribute from his collaborators on The Dark Knight. The end credits include a farewell note to Ledger and to special-effects technician Conway Wickliffe, who was killed last September in a stunt-car accident.

Christian Bailed Over Alleged Assault; Denies Wrongdoing
Batman is once again flying free. Which should make the rest of his press tour rather interesting.
Christian Bale has been released on bail after spending more than four hours in police custody at a central London station being interrogated over allegations he assaulted his 61-year-old mom, Jenny, and 40-year-old sister, Sharon, Sunday night.
"Mr. Bale, who denies the allegation, cooperated throughout, gave his account in full of the events in question, and has left the station without any charge being made against him by the police," the actor's lawyers at the high-powered London firm Schillings said in a statement.
"At this time, there will be no further comment by Mr. Bale."
He is due to return to the police station in September, pending further inquiries. Under British law, "police bail" does not require payment of a bond amount but simply a promise to return at the unspecified date.
He did, however, pay "modest" conditional fees.
The Dark Knight star was arrested earlier this morning after voluntarily turning up by appointment.
No details have yet been released over what allegedly transpired between the 34-year-old cinematic Caped Crusader and his female relations, but the incident purportedly took place in his room at London's posh Dorchester Hotel. Both women filed a report against the star Monday morning at their local police station.
The investigation was subsequently turned over to Scotland Yard. Authorities allowed Bale to attend Monday night's European premiere of the blockbuster before asking him to come in.
While neither woman has issued a formal statement on the incident, Bale's sister Sharon shouted "it's a family matter" out of a window at her home in Dorset to the swarm of reporters gathered at the Corfe Mullen house.
An unidentified man who answered the door of Bale's mother's Bournemouth home said she would not be commenting on the matter.
As for Bale, he was originally scheduled to participate in a round of radio interviews this afternoon, but his quality time with London's finest temporarily hindered his promotional capabilities.
It's unclear when or if those interviews will now take place—not that The Dark Knight is having trouble getting the word out on its release.
The film blew away all North American box-office records over the weekend, raking in $155.3 million its first three days out.
However, one of the actor's attorneys, Simon Smith, tells E! News that it was back to red carpet business as usual for the star, who is expected to make his next major appearance at the film's Spain premiere.
"I believe he is headed to Barcelona this evening," Smith said.

Batman: Mommy Insulted His Woman and Depressed About Heath
Don't mess with the wifey!
Britain's Daily Mail reports that Christian Bale was ENRAGED when mommy insulted his wife, Sandra 'Sibi' Blazic.
Interesting aside, Sibi was once Winona Ryder's personal assistant.
A source close to Batman says Bale's confident he’s done nothing wrong and blames his mother:
"Christian was stressed, but he didn’t lay a finger on anyone. Instead, he flew off the handle and cussed his mother. He just got very loud because his mother was saying some very outrageous things about him, and his wife."
"Christian's attitude is that this was his mother's fault because she became very provocative in an argument they were having,’" the source said, adding: "Things got out of control and he now says he wishes he just left the room."
"Normally Christian would just call a friend and go out to a pub to cool off. But he was literally trapped into this confrontation with his mother and sister because there was an army of fans and paparazzi outside."
"They're going to need a "cooling off" period because his mother said some pretty outrageous things to him that really set him off."
"He regrets the way she treated him in their argument a lot more than having to talk to police about it. Christian has admitted that something just snapped, but he didn't threaten anyone with violence."
Bale is reportedly having marital problems as well.
The report goes on to say:
"He can have a terrible temper. Instead of lashing out at his wife, he sometimes lashes out at people around him."
"He's under a lot of pressure right now and simply got incredibly loud with members of his family around. I think his wife is going to be very important to him after all this is over because she does, at the end of the day, know how to calm him down."
He is also said to have become depressed over the death of close friend and co-star Heath Ledger. The two actors formed a friendship when they both played Bob Dylan in the flick I’m Not There.
The source said, "Without Ledger around, he's found it more and more difficult to communicate with those around him, especially his family."
Another Bale insider confirms that Ledger's death was a massive blow for the Welshman:
"They had become very close during the making of The Dark Knight and Christian went into virtual hiding for the six weeks after Heath was found dead."
"He wasn't returning phone calls and he wasn't a happy man. It's foolish to think that he's been able to completely shake off that grief just as Heath and his work is finally being seen by audiences."
"He expected to share this moment with his friend, and now he can't."
It was also reported that Bale found it hard to shake off the mental strains of Batman, and told an interviewer he was having trouble sleeping.
Didn't Heath have trouble sleeping because of his The Dark Knight role too?
Sounds like Bale may need to get some therapy for his own good!
Looks like he's dealing with too much and doesn't know how to express himself without anger!

Bale’s sister wanted $200k
The Sun claims that Christian Bale’s sister’s demand for a $200k “loan” is what started the fight on Sunday that led to his arrest on Tuesday. After Bale snubbed his sister Sharon, she started insulting his wife Sibi. Wow, what a pleasant woman. A source told the tabloid:
“Christian is a very wealthy young man and was asked to help his sister out financially. He was asked to loan her £100,000 (~$200,000) but he refused and that caused an almighty row. During that row, the women claim, he assaulted them by pushing and shoving them. Both Jenny and Sharon are terribly upset over what happened. They did not want any publicity and the last thing they wanted to do was wreck his premiere evening. But they say he bullied them. They are both devastated that it has come to this but want him to be taught a lesson.”
The Sun claims that Sharon needed the $200k to help raise her three children, ages twelve, ten, and one. Look, child-rearing is expensive, it’s understandable that Sharon needs a little cash. I just hate to see her ambush her brother on one of the biggest nights of his career. If only there was a solution to this mess that didn’t involve leaching money from her brother, a “job” type solution if you will.

Dark Knight Makes Record-Breaking $300M in 10 Days
No argument: The Dark Knight is Hollywood's brightest light.
The Batman adventure, starring Christian Bale and Heath Ledger, shattered another box-office benchmark this weekend – reaching beyond the $300 million mark in a mere 10 days.
The movie grossed $75.6 million in its second weekend in theaters, bringing its North American box-office total to $314,245,000, Warner Bros. head of distribution Dan Fellman tells the Associated Press.
The number breaks the record established by 2006's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, which hit $300 million after 16 days.
Fellman says Dark Knight could conceivably reach the $400-million mark in about 18 days – placing it ahead of Shrek 2's 43-day record in 2004.
Hold on to your life preservers – The Dark Knight might also surpass 1997's Titanic as the highest-grossing film in U.S. history, according to Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers. That sinking-ship saga, starring Leonardo Di Caprio, made $600,788,188 domestically.
Rounding out this weekend's top five at the box office were Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly in Step Brothers, with an estimated $30 million; Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia!, $17.9 million; David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson in The X-Files: I Want to Believe, $10.2 million; and Brendan Fraser in Journey to the Center of the Earth, $9.4 million.

The Dark Knight Speeds to $400 Million
Eighteen days.
That's all it took for The Dark Knight to break $400 million.
The Batman movie grossed another $6.3 million on Monday, per final numbers from Exhibitor Relations, bringing its overall domestic total to $400,038,494 and setting yet another land-speed record.
The fastest film to $100 million, $200 million and $300 million is now the fastest film to $400 million. By a lot.
The "old" record, set back in 2004, was held by Shrek 2, which reached $400 million in a then-swift—and still impressive—43 days.
After just two-and-a-half weeks in release, The Dark Knight sits at eighth place on the list of all-time grossers. But it won't sit there long.
Today, it should pass the original Spider-Man ($403 million) and climb to seventh. By the weekend, it'll make its move on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (sixth place, $423 million), Star Wars: Episode I—The Phantom Menace (fifth place, $431 million) and maybe even E.T. (fourth place, $435 million).
At the same point in its release, 18 days in, Titanic, the No. 1 all-time box-office champ, had grossed $160 million.
But as much as director Christopher Nolan's superhero epic now appears to be unstoppable, it is slowing down—something Titanic, which accumulated its record $601 million when ticket prices were about 50 percent cheaper than today, didn't do for months and months after its debut.
Don't expect, though, The Dark Knight to feel bad about (maybe) settling for No. 2. Even before it has opened in countries such as Japan, Germany and South Korea, it has already taken in more than $600 million worldwide, per Box Office Mojo.
That kind of money can buy a very nice consolation prize.

Sorry for the double post, but I saw this movie this weekend and I have to honestly say that now I can understand why Heath Ledger has such a hard time sleeping and with nightmares after playing the part of the Joker. That movie was good, and it was awesome, but it was dark and demented and I was surprised someone actually took a small child to see that movie. I would not have taken my kids to see it until 15 or 16 years old-and not because of the killing, they don't show much blood and gore...but just because The Joker is so demented and creepy!
