Gossip Girl Spinoff Announced For Real!
The juiciest story right now is what happened way back when.
Putting the longstanding (and not-happening) rumors to rest, the CW has ordered a pilot for a Los Angeles-set Gossip Girl spinoff, E! News confirmed Wednesday.
The new venture from Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage is not, however, going to be a by-the-book look at Taylor Momsen's rebellious character, Jenny Humphrey, as was speculated for several months.
Instead, they have opted for an original story about Lily van der Woodsen and surely scandalous teen years growing up in the 1980s.
Gossip Girl's May 11 episode will reportedly serve as what is referred to as a "backdoor pilot" for the spin-off, introducing the younger Lily via flashbacks.
A new hot-young-thang will play Lily (maiden name Rhodes), who moves in with her black-sheep sister after a falling-out with her folks, going from a ritzy Montecito, Calif., boarding school to a public school in the San Fernando Valley.
Per the CW's release, "Caught between two worlds, Lily dives into the fast-paced Sunset Strip and the Hollywood lifestyle of the 1980s, journeying over the hill to a world of wealth and excess that used to be her own."
Eventually she'll meet a young Rufus Humphrey, who will at some point impregnate her.
"We didn't want to upset the chemistry of our cast — all of whom are crucial to the show," Savage said of creating a show that won't require the presence of the main Gossip Girl cast. "Nor did we want to dilute New York City as a character."
"We are inspired by the opportunity to tell overlapping stories and introduce characters that will appear in the past and the present, and hopefully enrich both shows," added Schwartz.
"We love exploring fashion, pop culture, music and a heightened world that's just a little more fun than the one we actually live in. L.A. in the '80s totally fits the bill."

Josh Schwartz Speaks on Gossip Girl Spinoff, Chair
Regarding the just-announced Gossip Girl spinoff, which will center around a young Lily van der Woodsen (Kelly Rutherford) and debut next fall after a brief introduction in May, executive producer Josh Schwartz had this to say to E! Online:
"I'm writing it right now with Stephanie [Savage] as we speak. We're being very careful that nothing we do will feel like we are biting off from the Gossip Girl original."
So will a young Rufus Humphrey also appear on the new series?
"Not at first," Schwartz said. "He's not one of our characters."
He added: "Maybe at some point, if the show is lucky enough to run for several seasons, it will come up, but it's just really about Lily and her sister Carol - Serena's aunt Carol - who's sort of this free spirit, a wannabe actress who's living in this house in the valley. Her experience on the other side as someone without money going to public school, having to make a whole new group of friends, being cast out from the world that she knew."
The spinoff will be presented as a flashback in the penultimate (second-to-last) episode of the current season of Gossip Girl, which airs May 11.
As for the undisputed No. 1 Gossip Girl fan question these days - What will happen with Chuck and Blair? - the big boss had the following to say: "You don't actually want to know the answer to that. The fun is in the journey."

Report: Brittany Snow to Star in Gossip Girl SpinoffTake this with a large grain of salt, as it's not from the most reliable source, but Star reports that former American Dreams actress Brittany Snow has been cast in the lead role of Lily van der Woodsen (Rhodes) in the forthcoming Gossip Girl spinoff. "Brittany is thrilled," a friend of the actress says. "She loves the original show and thinks the 1980s concept sets the Gossip Girl spin-off apart from other series on television. She can't wait to wear all the fabulous outfits and really sink her teeth into the role." Brittany Snow - who has appeared in movies including Hairspray and John Tucker Must Die - was the top choice for producers, who thought she would be the perfect choice for the part of young Lily, played on Gossip Girl by Kelly Rutherford. She was reportedly offered the role without an audition. "Brittany always thought she was going to continue her career in films," a source said. "But this is a marvelous part and she just couldn't say no. This has the potential to be a huge show in the tradition of Melrose Place." The "backdoor pilot" introducing the show will air as part of the Gossip Girl episode May 11 (episode 2.24, which will air one week before the Season 2 finale). UPDATE: Michael Ausiello of more-reliable EW reports that Snow has indeed emerged as the front-runner for the role, though it is not 100 percent official. What do you think? Can you see Snow as young Lily? Is she a good fit for the Gossip Girl spinoff role - assuming this report is accurate? Source: GGI

Interesting... I think she'll be a good Lilly Sounds weird though, but the only reason why I think maybe not is because of her voice- not like its bad! It's just completely different to older Lilly (Kelly), you know soft to deeper? But yeah that was a bit too random aha.. apart from that I think she's a good fit I'm looking forward to the spin off though, I'm interested to see who'll be playing Rufus!

Yeah, I look forward to this spin off too, just to see how it is! But I think it's not because the show isn't populiar, but I think it will be a part of the show, to show what happened in the past, to give us more clearly about it!!

The shows doing quite well though right..? For the CW anyway.. doesn't GG get the same/slightly less viewers then OTH? Which isnt a bad amount.. But yeah I don't really understand the reason for it either, but I'm interested to watch it anyway!

No, indeed! That's why I don't think that the CW wants to make this show because GG isn't populiar or has bad ratings! I think they wanna let us know what really happened with Lilly, to give us more inside of that character! And to set up a masterhit like OTH and GG are for the CW.. I think...

Hmm, I dont think its the best idea, I dont know whether or not I will watch, I think GG is fine alone, it doesnt need another story.
This makes me think tho, I wonder if OTH will have a spinoff after the next (and probably last) season.

Yeah, I probably will check out the first episode and see if I'm gonna follow it!
I think that some people have thought about that, but I heard Mark saying in an interview once that they can't do a spin-off with Jamie yet, because Jackson is too young to work long days.

That could be fun! Or maybe they can make a spin-off about Jamie and Leyton's baby but 20 years from now or something like that! haha

I always thought it would be fun to show OTH like 11/12 years in the future and have Jamie and Lilly as teenagers in tree hill high school. They could show Jamie getting in the basketball team and 'trying to follow his dads legacy' and Lilly as a bit like Brooke perhaps, being popular but caught in situations and has to change her personality..? Or her finding out what really happened to Keith (lets just say she doesnt know here lol ) They could show Jamie/Lilly as a Lucas/Haley type friendship. ...And they could also show Leyton's baby and another Naley baby as Jamies younger sister, haha the possibilities!! ;D But yeah, thats something I've imagined them doing for a while now lol, got a bit carried away with the ideas.. I would definately watch if they ever made a spin off like that! lol

haha, that would be really awesome! I really forgot about Lilly, but I would like that even more, because Leyton's baby and Jamie are 5 years apart, so that wouldn't make really sense, but Lilly and Jamie are just a few days apart. Isn't there some way that we can contact Mark with this idea? That would be awesome!!!
