Gossip Girl: What We Hope to See in January!
From past pregnancy scandals to confessions of true love, Gossip Girl's last new episode of 2008 left us shrieking on our couches, begging for more. Alas, our TVs would not oblige, and we're forced to wait until January like everyone else for new episodes. Until GG returns, we've been thinking about what we're really hoping to see when the show comes back in '09:
A new passion for Blair: Look, we love Blair and Chuck as much as anyone, but let's be realistic. Chuck's way too damaged for a relationship right now, and pursuing one with him is only going to send Blair to the heartbreak hotel. We're not saying she needs to find a new man right now, but she needs something new to focus on. Blair loves making goals, dreams, and plans, so perhaps a new party, a new friend, or even a new rival would give her a place to channel her energy and focus elsewhere until Chuck inevitably comes around. Because he has to eventually, right? We don't know how much more of this back-and-forth we can take.
Back-to-school Jenny: While we enjoyed watching Jenny go from fashion intern to runway show planner to homeless eyeliner addict, we think Lil' J's at her best when she's being mistreated by the queen bees of the Upper East Side -- it brings out her *friendly*y side, which is a lot of fun to watch. Let's see her spar with Penelope & Co. or Blair in her pursuit of the ultimate prize: popularity.
More angst from Chuck: If the previews are any indication, we'll get our wish on this one. Chuck won't lay low for long. He'll mourn Bart in the only way he knows how: by torturing himself and everyone who loves him. And it'll make for fabulous, painful television. We can't wait.
More interaction between series regulars: Commenter Sam mentioned this on our what-we-love-slash-loathe post, and it's spot-on. With so many guest stars, we've lost out on valuable time with our core six. Chuck and Blair have shared plenty of scenes, as have Dan and Serena and Serena and Blair. But Nate's spent most of the season prostituting himself, worrying about his family's woes, or flirting with Vanessa. We've barely seen any good Nate/Chuck scenes, nor has Nate hung out with Blair or Serena for more than a minute since the Hamptons. We'd love to see Nate, Chuck, Blair and Serena come together again like they did in Season One (much as we love the Humphreys, they're not part of the original Upper East Side clan). And we have the perfect setup -- after all, Chuck needs his friends more than ever now, so it makes sense that they'd team up to help him out. Come on, GG, don't let us down!
Nate and Vanessa -- the real deal: We're probably in the minority on this one, but now that they've decided to try dating again, we'd like to see Nate and Vanessa try to make it work on their OWN devices. If they're going to implode, let's see it unfold and let it be because Nate's too pretty, or Vanessa's too annoying, or whatever -- but enough with the third-party interference and contrived subplots (Catherine/ Nate's prostitution, anyone?). We have confidence that these two can find plenty of reasons to break up without anyone else getting in the way.
Rufus/Lily clashes: After a season-and-a-half of pining over Lily without really doing that much about it (well, except for sleeping with her on her wedding day, but we digress), Rufus finally has a reason to be mad at her. And mad he is! Did you see his face in that train station scene? Whatever it is she's kept from him (our bet is she had his kid and never even told him), it's a guaranteed drama-booster, and that's something these characters need. Their dynamic of we-love-each-other-but-the-timing's-just-not-right needed a game-changer, and Lily's big secret is it. We're excited to see Rufus with a new expression -- one that's not moon-faced and dreamy, but downright mad. Bring on the drama!
A convincing love interest for Dan: Okay, this may be a bit controversial, since the idea of schmoopy Dan is a turnoff for a lot of GG's audience. But hear us out. What has Dan really done this season besides pine after Serena (but pretend not to) and pen an article about Bart Bass (but pretend not to)? He can't pine or pen anymore -- Serena's made it clear that she's taken, and Bart is now six feet under. It's time for Dan to move on, and we think another woman is the perfect cure for what ails him. Just don't make it Aaron's bud Lexi or anyone else connected to Serena -- D and S need some real time apart. Speaking of Serena...
The return of Evil Serena -- but in a new context: She was deliciously evil, as promised -- for all of one measly episode. Then Serena returned to her usual easygoing self... and she got kind of boring. We'd love to see Evil Serena return -- maybe when she finally realizes Aaron is a sleaze and kicks him to the curb? Or when she discovers Lily's horrible secret? Come on -- there's got to be something out there that'll light a fire under Serena so she gets flat-out mad. The second half of Season Two needs to figure out what that is and bring her back!
Do you agree with us? What are you hoping to see on GG come January 5? And what do you absolutely NOT want to see?
