'Twilight' Tuesday: 10 Things Comic-Con Taught Us About 'Twilight'
Which star used to dress up as Fox Mulder? Who made sure 'Bella's Lullaby' made it into the film?
On today’s Twilight Tuesday, Larry gives us the 10 things we’ve learned about Twilight at Comic-Con.
Unless you've been living under a rock for the past week, you've likely heard that the stars of the film "Twilight" (due in December) made their first collective public appearance at Comic-Con on Thursday, setting off a feeding frenzy among media who are just now realizing that this movie might sell a few tickets.
But as we welcome other media outlets to the party, we've also got one thing to confess: Even after all the "Twilight" Tuesdays we've been running this year, there are still a few things about Stephenie Meyer's universe that we didn't know.
Now, we've returned from Comic-Con a little bit older, a little bit wiser and a little bit deafer, and we present our list of "10 Things Comic-Con Taught Us About 'Twilight.' "
We Believe In Spunk Ransom
"Whenever I used to go to a fancy dress party, I always used to dress up as Fox Mulder," Robert Pattinson revealed to us after grabbing a look at some of the caped crusaders roaming the halls. "It was such a normal costume, but I'd just wear a suit." The actor added that he can't wait to see the new "X-Files" flick. "Yeah, I'm a big fan," he said. "I'm definitely going to see it."
Tonight, We Dine in Forks!
Asked which costume he'd want to wear if he attended Comic-Con as a fan, Cam Gigandet said that he'd like to bring back the impressive abs he showed off in the movie "Never Back Down." "What are the guys from '300'?" he asked about Zack Snyder's barely clad Spartans. "I'd like to be one of them."
No Needles, Just Pins
One Twilighter made special pins and allowed the cast to choose which ones they received — and the ones they chose to pin on their shirts revealed a lot about them. "We were just doing an autograph signing, and a girl made up a bunch of different ones and she let me pick one," gushed Rachelle Lefevre. "So I appropriately picked the one that says 'I Punched a Werewolf in the Face,' and I love it!" (Director Catherine Hardwicke's read "Friends Don't Let Friends Date Werewolves.")
Laurent Wants To Be A Guitar Hero
"I felt like a rock star," Edi Gathegi said about the chaotic scene inside Comic-Con's enormous Hall H. "[I've never seen anything like it] in my life — it was thrilling. If I could change one thing, I would have stepped out and strummed an air guitar. That'd be cool. But instead, I came out shy and timid."
You're Welcome, Cam
Gigandet revealed to us backstage that he might be a bit more prepared for Hall H than some of his co-stars, because he had appeared in front of a large crowd once before. "It was the MTV Movie Awards," he remembered of his recent appearance. "But I didn't really speak. I just kinda mumbled a few words." Still, he said that answering fans' questions on the spot is tougher than acting: "I'm not good. I wish they were all written for me — my lines just kind of posted up on the wall [of Hall H] would be great."
Robert Pattinson Is A Better Musician Than He Thinks
Onstage, Meyer and director Catherine Hardwicke called their star's musical compositions "amazing" and told us where they'd be in the movie. RPattz himself, however, is charmingly shy about his talents. "It's just a weird little song," he said of one of the compositions, which he hasn't named yet. "It's really random. It comes at a strange point in the movie. ... It's towards the end of the movie, but it's not Edward-related. There was one cut of the movie that had the song."
The "Twilight" Actors Are Yummy In More Ways Than One
"Once we got to get in there with each other up against the mirrors and stuff, it was pretty wild," Gigandet said of the ballet-studio fight scene they revealed to the audience. "We had honey and chicken flying everywhere! That was our substitute for human flesh. Honey and chicken [were all over us]. I'm serious!"
Getting To Know You
Although Twilighters have been obsessing over them for months, many of the movie's stars had never met each other until just recently. "I didn't meet [Lefevre] until a couple weeks ago," marveled Taylor Lautner. "And I just met Edi today for the first time."

"There were a couple moves I did actually have from the movie that they let me incorporate," revealed Cam Gigandet, adding that if you look closely, you might see some mixed-martial-arts moves in his epic battle with Robert Pattinson. " a lot of things that I do well. But it was so much different from the fights in 'Never Back Down,' because [the 'Twilight' vampires] have superhuman strength. So every hit and every throw and everything, really, had to have such a huge effect. [We'd] go flying into the rafters, through windows — having that much wirework made it on a much grander scale than ['Never Back Down']."
Lullaby And Good Night
The "Twilight" stars broke big news about "Bella's Lullaby" and told us backstage about the one person who made sure the musical moment got into the film: Stephenie Meyer. "I asked for the lullaby to be in there," the author revealed, saying she knew the fans would insist upon it. "It was not in the original script." Added Hardwicke: "The day that [Pattinson] played the lullaby scene, we were weepy. ... We're really glad that Stephenie made us put it in."

Madly in Love with Fictional Guys (Edward Cullen + Me 4ever)
So it's not quite love at first sight, but every now and then, I get love at first "read"...and end up falling madly in love with fictional book characters. Crazy? Maybe. After all, it's basically like making up an imaginary friend in my head, right? But as I read the words that describe them, I can't help that my heart just beats a tad faster.
One of my first literary crushes was Oliver Wood in J.K Rowling's Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. It's not like he was even that prominent of a character, but the moment I read his name, I just had a thing for him. I had him perfectly pictured in my head...and then when the movies came along, it was as if the casting directors snuck into my brain and stole a photo of my #1 Qudditch player. Sean Biggerstaff who played him in the films officially became my Harry Potter crush (and that accent didn't hurt either).
But soon, my Wood crush was overshadowed by Cedric Diggory. I swooned along with Hermione and Ginny whenever he appeared. And I practically fainted when he asked Cho Chang to the Yule Ball (after all, I like to think she's me- Ra"Cho" Chang- ha!). Once again, those Harry Potter casting director surprised me by pulling Robert Pattinson out of all the guys in the world... who is pretty much an exact replica of the Cedric I dreamed about in my head. When I talked to Robert on the phone before Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire came out, he even sounded like what I imagined Cedric would sound like. And he was so kind and modest about his role... and had the sweetest chuckle... that I literally fell in love with the human version of my literary crush.
So what were the chances that with an entirely different book series about an entirely different subject matter that Robert was again cast as another fictional character I fell for? Yup, as Edward Cullen in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight.
Ooooh. Even as I type his name, I get chills. Edward Cullen. Could there ever be a more crush-worthy name? (Okay, apparently, I'm head over heels in love.) Every time he touched Bella's face or said the perfect words to her, I couldn't help myself. The more pages I flipped, the more I loved Edward. The way he gently stroked Bella's face. The way he scooped her up and carried her. The way he had that loud yet precious chuckle. To the point that I, just like Bella, totally forgot that he wasn't even human. All I wanted was to look out my window and see him pull up in his silver Volvo (ironically, my first car in real life too!) and wisk me away into the forest.
And let's just forget the fact that these guys are all wizards and vampires. Even if they were real, it wouldn't help matters. And these are so not the kinds of stories I normally would have the slightest bit of interest in, but the human traits of these superhumans just make them the perfect guys... at least in my imagination.
So tell me guys, am I totally nuts to be in love with Edward, Cedric, and Oliver? Is it time to get a grasp on reality? Then again, isn't that the point of these books? To create a perfect storybook world with these hot--albeit imaginary--guys? Tell me what you think... and who your literary crushes are (if you're as crazy as I am).

How did 1997's Titanic earn an astounding $600 million at the box office to become the number one movie of all time? Two words: repeat business. Teen girls flocked to mall multiplexes to swoon over Leo over and over. Women dragged their husbands to see the three-hour epic again again. (A few of us lucked out and saw Good Will Hunting instead.) There's just no other reason for it. The movie became an event that people -- primarily females -- wanted to enjoy over again. Superhero adventure movies like Iron Man, The Dark Knight and Indiana Jones are raking in the dough this year but I can't imagine they have a lot of repeat business. Iron Man fell out of the weekend top five after five weeks. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull dropped out after four weeks. Jury's still out on TDK of course. When Titanic opened on Dec. 19, 1997, it stayed in the top five for 19 weeks. It ranked number one for an amazing 15 straight weekends! (A bit of trivia: Lost in Space knocked it from #1 in April 1998.) A little movie coming this December will have filmgoers -- again, mostly female -- to see it over and over. It has a number of things in common with Titanic; enough that it might just pose a threat to Titanic's astronomical numbers. That movie is Twilight. Twilight is only now becoming a household name. The movie is based on the popular book series by Stephanie Meyer. It's the modern day love story between a vampire and a human. It's a tale of forbidden love much like Romeo & Juliet. The couple in Twilight is ordinary girl Bella and blood-drinking immortal Edward. When the fourth book in the series, "Breaking Dawn," arrives on shelves Aug. 2, the saga will have over 10 million copies in print. There are over a hundred fan web sites paying honor to the books. The female fanaticism around these books is unreal. Just yesterday at the Comic-Con in San Diego, fans lined up for "nearly a mile" to get into a panel with Twilight stars according to the MTV Movies Blog. Back to Titanic. Our resident box office expert John Couture cites three reasons for that movie's $600 million payday. They combined for what he calls a perfect storm at the box office. The Leo Effect - Teen girls paid lots of money repeatedly to see heartthrob Leonardo DiCaprio on the big screen Holiday Release - Titanic earned nearly $200 million from Dec. 19 through Jan. 9, a holiday period when lots of teens are away from school/college. The movie made the bulk of its revenue during the months of January, March, and April -- a time when Hollywood typically refuses to put out quality movies. Oscar Success - Titanic won 11 Academy Awards on Mar. 23, 1998. That fueled its longevity at the box office. So, how does Twilight compare? The closest thing to Leo it has is Robert Pattinson. He's the British actor in the lead role of vampire Edward Cullen. (He played Cedric Diggory in the last two Harry Potter movies). I don't think he's the hunk of burning love that Leo was, but then again, I don't claim to be a teen girl -- well, not anymore at least. As Rob says in the above video, it's really the Edward character that the girls love. It could pretty much be any tall, brooding dude in the role. The Twilight franchise is what will drive girls back to theaters again and again to see this movie. They love the characters and they love the story. The power of Meyer's books are a more-than-worthy replacement for "The Leo Effect" in the box office success formula. Twilight does have a holiday release in common with Titanic. It's coming to theaters on Dec. 12. Just in time for many repeat performances over holiday break. There's also not a lot of big competition this December. Seven Pounds with Will Smith and The Day the Earth Stood Still with Keanu Reeves are both releasing the same day; they'll be no match. Coincidentally, DiCaprio and Kate Winslet re-team for Revolutionary Road on Dec. 26. In '97/'98, Titanic had to fight off Tomorrow Never Dies, Good Will Hunting, and The Wedding Singer. There was also another movie it defeated starring Paul Newman and Reese Withersthingy -- it was titled Twilight. That totally smacks of Lincoln-Kennedy associations to me. Does Twilight have any hope of Oscar glory? Probably not. But then again, who knows? Much of that is up to director Catherine Hardwicke to produce a worthy adaptation. She hasn't met with much critical success with her previous works -- Thirteen, Lords of Dogtown, and The Nativity Story. One huge point to consider is that the film is being produced and distributed by Summit Entertainment. They are very much the new kids on the block. They have only a handful of films on their resume. Its widest release was Never Back Down on 2,729 screens and it grossed just $25 million. Titanic's max screens was 3,265. The Dark Knight is on 4,366 theater screens currently. I just don't think Summit has the funding or clout to put out a movie that big. My very early estimate -- remember, it's still five months away -- for Twilight's opening take is $36 million. It will have some longer than usual legs and gross a total of $162 million during its winter run. Our B.O. guru John is a lot more optimistic than I. As he indicates, he has a special relationship with Twilight's opening date. Here is what he has to say: Twilight continues the long and storied tradition of hit Hollywood movies that open on my birthday (Dec. 12) including The Godfather Part II, Guess Who's Coming To Dinner, Stir Crazy and Home Alone 3. Sadly, I just don’t see the perfect storm hitting this year. There won’t be much Oscar appeal and the older audiences probably won’t get it. I’m predicting that it will open with $70 million and to finish with roughly $250 million in box office receipts. Source- Videoeta.com

Mere hours after finishing “Breaking Dawn,” she got to sit down with Stephenie Meyer. But since Lisa was asking her your burning questions, we all win, right? Anyway, you can read those answers here. One of our own burning questions stems from Meyer’s conversation with Kim Stolz before the book was released, in which the insightful author said that if “Breaking Dawn” were made into a movie, it would have to be broken in two. Spoilerish...Stephenie got back to us on that one, with a not-so-controversial answer: “The book is actually broken up into book one, book two and book three, and the end of book two is kind of the exact middle of the story,” Meyer said, referring to the conclusion of the section Jacob narrates, when Renesmee is born and Bella becomes a vampire. “It really feels like the clearest place to stop the action, but I’m not a movie person, I don’t know. I just think it’s too long for one movie.” But wouldn’t a movie that ended that way be a little, well, frustrating? It reminds me of sitting in the theater after the end of “Fellowship of the Ring” and watching the reaction of the couple in front of me who had clearly never read the books. Rehabilitate America’s fragile standing in the world. Oh, and get through four “Twilight” books with his youngest daughter. Yes, according to the latest issue of US Weekly, Stephenie Meyer has a couple fans who will be moving into 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in a couple months. The magazine reports that the President-Elect and his ten-year-old daughter Malia often bond over addictive book series, “They read all the Harry Potter books together and have moved on to the Twilight series.” What does this mean? A Presidential screening of “Twilight” at the White House? Robert Pattinson for Secretary of Dreamy Eyes? Anything is possible. Midnight showings earn $7 million!! [/b] FRIDAY UPDATE: Summit Entertainment sources now tell me Twilight midnight screenings made "north of $7 million" Thursday. That's a big number. Some updates on the Twilight zone phenomenon: major online ticket-seller Fandango has been selling 5 Twilight tickets per second as of early this morning. According to an online poll, 34% of moviegoers said they will take off a few hours from school or the office today to see the pic. It’s Fandango's fastest-selling film since The Dark Knight in July of this year. It now occupies the #3 spot on Fandango’s list of Top Advance Ticket-Sellers, surpassing the Harry Potter, Pirates Of The Caribbean, and Lord of the Rings movies. (Only Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and The Dark Knight remain in the #1 and #2 spots, respectively.) THURSDAY PM: With thousands of sold-out shows because of pre-sales, Summit Entertainment field teams weren't expecting any massive lines for Thursday's midnight screenings. As a Summit distribution exec reminded, "The days of lining up hours before are gone due the Internet. " Boy, was he wrong! I'm told that in Phoenix, Arizona, 4 major local TV news crews did live evening broadcasts because of the long lines for the midnight shows for Twilight at the Harkins Tempe Marketplace. And footage was even shot of the massive audience sitting in the sold-out Cine Capri, one of the largest theaters in the city. In Cincinnati, Ohio, the crowd began forming over four hours early for the midnight screening at the Showcase Florence, which sold out two houses for the midnight screening and were working on a third. I'm told almost everyone attending had some kind of store bought or homemade Twilight T-shirt. I first pegged major fangirl interest in Twilight back in July. Then I projected the vampire pic as a low-cost blockbuster back in October. So it feels anticlimactic that Summit Entertainment finally released its holiday tentpole at the midnight showings in many of this weekend's 3,419 booked theaters. Much has been made of the fact that studios passed on this project. But if 1 1/2 quadrant pics like this (appealing to tween/teen girls and their moms) didn't fulfill the majors' requirements for broad audience appeal, then the mini-majors would have nothing to release. And don't forget how many successful book series have garnered studio greenlights only to wind up as film flops instead of the next film franchises. Not to mention the exhausted vampire premise. That said, all my box office gurus are gleeful that Twilight will open to a $50+M and perhaps even a $60+M weekend. One studio bigwig skeptically noted to me that "$60+M would be bigger than Sex and the City's opening. But, in this business, anything is possible, right?" In terms of pre-sales, Twilight should break into the Top 5 on the list of Top 10 Advance Ticket-Sellers, covering all theatrical releases in Fandango’s 8-year history. The pic also made into MovieTickets.com's Top 10. Hundreds and then thousands of shows sold out day by day, accounting for 94% of Fandango’s daily ticket sales by mid-week. Here's what bodes well: 83% of respondents to a Fandango Twilight survey claim they will see the movie more than once. And 25% claim they will see Twilight with their moms or daughters. Also, 67% contend that Twilight’s most appealing element is its “love story” while only 18% selected the “vampire lore”. The teen and tween demographic of fickle fangirls have flexed their box office power in 2008, helping Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour and High School Musical 3: Senior Year become big pre-sellers like Twilight. Disney's Bolt has been somewhat overshadowed by the phenomenon of the Twilight Zone. The solid family fare will have the largest digital 3D release ever, opening at approximately 979 Digital 3D locations. With the studio confident the movie plays to everyone, Bolt opens in 3,651 theaters and should debut to a $35M weekend. "It’s clear that Twilight will be the No. 1 opening movie," a Disney insider tells me. "But we look at our opening as a 10-day event because of the Thanksgiving holiday being so good for family entertainment." Last Saturday, the studio sneaked the pic at around 880 theaters playing at about 73% capacity "which should bode well for word of mouth." After all the Bond hoopla, it's worth mentioning that Oscar-touted Slumdog Millionaire expands into 32 venues. The Fox Searchlight pic opened last Wednesday on 10 screens and grossed $32,984. This Wednesday on the same 10 screens it grossed $50,659, which is a 54% increase in the identical theaters. " As one studio insider tells me, "That NEVER happens. As a point of reference, even Juno last year didn’t do this. We opened Juno on Wednesday December 5th and grossed $52,643 on 7 screens. We were amazed the following Wednesday when Juno grossed $47,532, which was only a 10% drop from it’s opening day. To go UP 54% is staggering. " As for the pic's previous weekend, it was the best of 2008 for a specialized film with the highest per screen average of the year, beating Changeling and Rachel At The Wedding. Opening day earns $33 million! [/b] FRIDAY 9:30 p.m. (Pacific): Vampire Edward Cullen and Bella Swan, the leading characters in the film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight, may be models for abstinence and chastity, but the movie’s hardcore fans are not abstaining from the box office and their fervor for the Summit release is anything but chaste. After a reported $7.5M for Thursday midnight screenings, throngs of girls have packed multiplexes all day long, and the Catherine Hardwicke-directed movie has generated another $25.5M since sunrise Friday for a spectacular $33M opening day. Now the question is, how will Twilight perform the rest of the weekend and in its total domestic run. The smart money is on the 3-day following the Sex & the City formula with $22.1M Saturday, down about 33% Friday-to-Saturday, followed by a 30% Saturday-to-Sunday dip to a possible $15.4M. That would bring the weekend haul to an impressive $70.58M If that number holds, and there is room for error because this is some uncharted territory (there has never been anything quite like Twilight), but the multiple (the number that you multiply the opening weekend by to reach the total domestic gross) could be as low as 2.25, which would be about the same as High School Musical 3: Senior Year (Disney). My sense is that this movie is very, very niche, and the multiple could be even less than HSM3, which has benefited from big family audience business. I am guessing that Summit’s biggest movie ever will finish in the $145M-$150M range. This is all fantastic news for Summit. As a production company, they have produced many successful many successful films, including Evita ($50M cume), American Pie ($102.5M cume), Mr. And Mrs. Smith ($186.3M cume), Step Up ($65.3M cume), Step Up 2 the Streets ($58M cume), and the current arthouse hit Happy-Go-Lucky ($1.8M cume so far), which will likely earn Sally Hawkins a Best Actress nomination at this year’s Oscars, but the saga of Edward and Bella is only the 6th movie that they have distributed themselves. The previous 5 – P2 ($4M cume), Penelope ($10M), Never Back Down ($24.8M), Fly Me to the Moon ($12.2M) and Sex Drive ($8.3M) – combined to gross $59.3M domestic, less than Twilight’s opening weekend. Chalk the success of Twilight up as one for the crowd that says "There's too much sex and violence in Hollywood movies." The author Meyer, a Mormon and has never tried alcohol or seen an R-rated movie, is the biggest star in the industry this weekend. Twilight is about vampires, but the books, and now blockbuster movie, are about old-fashioned romance and chivalry. Edward and Bella are the morally sound antidote to TV shows like Gossip Girl and the new version of Beverly Hills 90210. Can a movie make abstinence the cool thing to do? All those high school and college guys who are getting dragged to see this one on their Friday and Saturday dates are likely to put the theory to the test. The other major wide release this weekend is Bolt from Walt Disney Animation Studios, but, after Beverly Hills Chihuahua, audiences may have had their fill of talking dogs. Despite almost 900 engagements in Disney Digital 3D, Bolt managed only about $7.1M on opening day, edged by Quantum of Solace (Sony), which grabbed $8.7M on its 2nd Friday. I still anticipate a #2 finish for the well-reviewed animated movie with a possible $27.69M, but the number is well below expectations. Bolt is not from Pixar, but the executive producer is Oscar winner John Lasseter who wrote and directed Pixar mega-hits Toy Story, Toy Story 2, A Bug's Life and Cars. The most recent glory days for Disney Animation started in 1989 with the now-classic The Little Mermaid ($111.5M domestic) and peaked with 1994's The Lion King ($328.5M domestic). The era also included excellent movies like Beauty & the Beast ($171.3M domestic), Aladdin ($217.3M domestic), Pocahontas ($141.5M domestic) and Mulan ($120.6M domestic). The company seemed to come off the rails right after 1999’s Tarzan, which scored a huge $171M US gross. This was Disney trying to capture some of that Pixar magic for its own animation brand. Since 2000, Walt Disney Animation Studios has released 15 films with an average opening weekend of only $12.3M and an average domestic gross of just $73.3M, so Bolt is way above the company's recent batting average. But it is still not the monstrous blockbuster they badly want. I am projecting $26.97M for the rebooted James Bond movie Quantum of Solace (Sony), pushing its 10-day domestic cume to $109M. Dreamworks/Paramount and their sturdy Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa will manage another solid weekend. Mad 2 rounded up $3.75M on Friday, and it should reach $16.68M for the 3-day for a new cume of $138.1M. The equally durable David Wain comedy Role Models (Universal) will round out the top 5 for the weekend. The picture added another $2.4M on Friday and that could translate to $7.44M by Monday morning.
