Honorable Mentions
Because you asked for them, we’d like to give a shout out to Dean & Anna (Supernatural), Lee & Kara (Battlestar Galactica), Lilly & Rufus (Gossip Girl), House & Cuddy (House), Adama & Roslin (Battlestar Galactica), Clark & Chloe (Smallville), and… we suppose, Dean & the impala (Supernatural).
#20 Spencer and Ashley
If you haven't heard of Spencer and Ashley, don't worry, you're not alone. There's this tiny show on the tween network The-N which revolves around the romantic relationship of two teenage girls. Why were Spencer and Ashley in this running? Besides the fact that our list needed a little bit of diversity, Spashley managed to capture the hearts of people of all ages despite the fact that it dealt with such a controversial subject matter on a network that caters almost entirely to teens. South of Nowhere shows us that epic love stories come in all forms.
#19 Starr and Dallas
Competitive reality TV sees a lot of back-stabbing and scandal, but we rarely get to see two people fall in love. On a show like The Amazing Race, it's common to see teams routinely screw one another over. This season however, our hearts were warmed by the blossoming love of Starr and Dallas. The couple is still together today, proving that The Amazing Race can be just as successful as The Bachelor.
#18 Lucas and Brooke
BuddyTV users were quick to point out that Brooke and Lucas are no longer together. This is true, but we could not justify leaving Brucas off the list after they won our “Best Couple of One Tree Hill” poll. You also have to give them props for surviving the Peyton betrayal and the Chris fiasco and for trying to stay together for so long. Many thought Brooke and Lucas were the perfect example of two people struggling for their love against all odds. Who knows if we’ve seen the last of the beloved Brucas?
#17 Dexter and Rita
There’s a certain delicate balance to the life of Dexter. He claims to have no regular human emotions but time and time again, he proves that he cares for the people closest to him in his life. Dexter genuinely cares for Rita and her children and their relationship, although strange, has a certain sweetness. From the time they first slept together in “Shrink Wrap” to their marriage at the end of season 3 in “Do you Take Dexter Morgan?”, Dexter and Rita found a way to endure, even through the darkest of circumstances.
#16 Callie and Mark
Lovers to best friends to lovers to best friends? One thing is for sure, Callie and Mark care for one another deeply. Whether or not they find their way back to each other is debatable. Callie’s distracted by women and Mark can’t seem to get over his lifelong bad boy phase. They still occasionally sleep together, always exhibit a mutual brutal honest and recently have been keeping each other accountable for not sleeping with interns.
#15 Sawyer and Kate
Ah, Sawyer and Kate. Of all the questions proposed in Lost, who Kate belongs with is oft-discussed. Many cite her and Sawyer's “bad” tendencies as proof that they belong together. Of course, everyone knows she told Sawyer she loved him, although it was under life or death circumstances. One thing is certain, Sawyer loves Kate very deeply and has proven previously he’ll fight for her love… and give her mixed tapes.
#14 Jim and Pam
The Office wouldn’t be The Office without Jim and Pam. Jim’s unconditional love was both beautiful and painful to watch as the first couple seasons unfolded. Anyone would be smitten after the “Booze Cruise” episode where their awkward moment is filled with Jim’s looks of longing, love and regret. The two share so much chemistry that even a simple proposal at a gas station can make us jump up and down with joy. One things for sure, these two need to end up happily ever after.
#13 Chuck and Sarah
Chuck and Sarah are the next Sydney and Vaughn. The only difference is that there’s no covert agency like SD6 where as soon as it’s taken down, the two can get together. Sure, there’s Fulcrum, but the end of Fulcrum doesn’t mean that Chuck and Sarah can finally be with one another. When Chuck is no longer required to be the Intersect, Casey is supposed to kill him. These star-crossed lovers might not ever get together but that doesn’t mean we’re not rooting for them. Sarah loves Chuck and Chuck loves Sarah and for now, that’s enough.
#12 Danny and Lindsay
Danny and Lindsay of CSI: NY did not immediately hit it off when she started working at the crime lab. In fact, Danny played a trick on Lindsay that got her into a wee bit of trouble with their supervisor. Over time, though, the two developed a friendship, which eventually blossomed into a romantic relationship. Danny was continually a stand-up a guy, just trying to break through because Lindsay was holding back. Her back-story was finally revealed and they developed this mutual respect. Danny and Lindsay are now starting a family that is sure to be a loving one.
#11 Barney and Robin
Ah, watching Barney fall in love with Robin was quite possibly the sweetest thing ever. And we all know they are perfect for one another. For instance, in “Not a Father's Day,” Barney and Robin both start out hating children and by the end of the episode they’ve progressed to being obsessed with a cute baby sock. More recently, when Ted and Robin started a friends with benefits arrangement, it was heartbreaking (albeit hilarious) to see Barney break television set after television set in frustration and sorrow. When will Robin wisen up and realize Barney and her are meant to be?
#10 Nathan and Haley
In the first season of One Tree Hill, we never expected that Nathan and Haley’s relationship would blossom into what it is today. Nathan initially pursued Haley in order to infuriate her best friend and his half-brother Lucas but their undeniable chemistry instantly changed things. The truth of the matter is that Haley makes Nathan want to be a better man. They’ve had ups and downs but their marriage has survived and remains strong as they both work to raise their son, Jamie.
#9 Jack and Kate
Jack and Kate win out the Lost debate with BuddyTV users, trumping Sawyer and Kate by 6 positions on our list. From the very first episode, Jate fans knew that Jack and Kate were destined to be with one another. Instantly, they found strength in one another, which is no easy feat. Although their moments are often subtle (I’ve never seen shippers get more excited over glances), the intensity they feel for one another is apparent. In "Something Nice Back Home,” we get to see the happy life they could share. If only things would end that way…
#8 Ned and Chuck
Ned and Chuck’s love story is one that offers both the innocent grandeur of a child’s first object of adoration, and the exquisite pain of star-crossed, semi-unrequited love. Set against a lush and vibrant backdrop of color and spontaneous song, the viewer is swept up in the fairytale potential of Ned and Chuck’s devotion to one another. Between saran-wrap separated stolen kisses and longing glances across kitschy reanimated corpses, is the pining and desperate hope for a happy ending. We wait for the moment when the Technicolor songbirds swell and the Dr. Seussian narrator proclaims that they have made it.
#7 Sylar and Elle
Sylar and Elle first met when Elle was working as an agent with The Company alongside H.R.G. The Company sent Elle undercover to investigate Sylar’s (then Gabriel’s) powers. In the process, she ended up falling for him. They had an instant connection, and Elle didn't want to complete her mission because she saw that deep down Gabriel was a good person trying to fight his power, but they made her do it. He found out who she really was and she came to blame herself for his going to the dark side for good. They didn’t reunite until Sylar killed Elle’s father.
#6 Chuck and Blair
“Three words, eight letters. Say it and I’m yours.” Blair and Chuck are definitely the most interesting part of Gossip Girl. Their chemistry is electric and yet, they are probably the one couple on this list that could be together but (most of the time) mutually agree that they shouldn’t. Both believe their passion comes largely from messing with one another’s lives and neither can give up their self-absorbent lifestyles. It seemed Blair was willing, but Chuck can’t seem to give up his old playboy ways and potentially will never change.
#5 Sam and Ruby
The demon and the hunter find love? Well, no, not really. Ruby’s instant attraction to Sam was undeniable, but then again, she’s a demon. Dean was always against it, but after he went to Hell, Sam went off the deep end and Ruby was quick by his side. Killing demons together and having lots of sex, the two formed an unusual bond. Although it’s not a relationship to stop the presses, BuddyTV users seem to be on board.
#4 Lois and Clark
We all know that Lois and Clark are destined for one another. When Lois first swept into Clark’s life, it seemed as if she would never warm to his small-town, farm-boy charms. “Committed” was the first real glimpse into Lois’ feelings. While under the threat of torture if she lies, Lois admits that she loves Clark. Later on, she told Clark she had managed to fool the lie detector, but their relationship changed from that point on. Their subtle glances and flirtations are building into a real connection that stands a fighting chance to last a lifetime.
#3 Lucas and Peyton
Lucas’ unrequited attraction to Peyton started off the series with a bang. Although she was with Nathan at the time, we all knew she felt the same. Throughout all their various relationships with other people, Lucas and Peyton have been there for one another every step of the way. With Lucas and Brooke’s long-lasting relationship, it was Peyton’s turn to feel the unrequited love. Finally, in season six, Peyton gets to marry the man who saved her life. Leyton fans can rejoice knowing that, this time, they’re the top couple of One Tree Hill.
#2 Booth and Brennan
Booth and Brennan have the best bickering of any couple on television. And, of course, their bickering is filled with sexual tension galore. They are staying apart because of professionalism but it’s hard to keep your distance when you’re forced to share kisses under the mistletoe like in “The Santa in the Slush.” They tease, but they’re overprotective. They’re in therapy, but they’re not even together. It’s best put by Booth when he said, “There’s someone you’re meant to spend the rest of your life with. You just have to be open enough to see it. That’s all.”
#1 Michael and Sara
On paper, finding a way to incorporate a realistic love story into a show about breaking out of prison seems next to impossible, but when you have a character as impossibly good looking as Michael Scofield, drastic measures must be taken. Enter the beautiful and intelligent Sara Tancredi. Introduced as Michael’s prison doctor in season one, the writers and directors of Prison Break managed to gradually develop a relationship that was both genuine and swoon worthy. From the moment when Michael snuck a daring kiss in between insulin shots in ‘Fox River Penitentiary’ to when Michael discovers what he thinks is the decapitated head of Sara in season three, the audience waited with bated breath for these two crazy fugitives to have their happy ending.
